PACE PAPERBACK BOOKLETS

Stacks of educational books on various subjects.

PACE - Paperback Booklets

A.C.E. PACE (Packet of Accelerated Christian Education) workbooks are self-instructional, consumable booklets designed for individualized, mastery-based learning. Each subject has 12 PACEs per academic level, and students typically complete a full set (around 70+ PACEs across subjects) in a school year, working at their own pace.

Standard Structure of a PACE

1. Front / Goal Page (first page)

  • Learning objectives (what the student will know or be able to do by the end).
  • A specific Scripture verse to memorize (usually King James Version).
  • A character trait to focus on (one of ~90 biblical character traits emphasized throughout the curriculum, such as diligent, truthful, or considerate).
  • Any required supplies or special notes.
  • Students (and often the supervisor) review and sign this page. Students set daily goals based on it.

2. Instructional Content – Divided into Three Main SectionsThe body of the PACE is broken into three roughly equal sections of teaching material and activities. Each section includes:

  • Clear explanations and examples.
  • Fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, matching, short-answer, or application exercises.
  • Illustrations, cartoons (often featuring Ace and Christi characters in lower levels), diagrams, and occasional maps or charts.
  • Built-in review of previous concepts.
  • Occasional “scoring strips” where the student marks progress.
  • At the end of each of the three sections is a Checkup.

3. Checkups (usually three per PACE)

  • Mini-quizzes that test mastery of the just-completed section.
  • Taken without looking back in the PACE.
  • Student scores the Checkup using a separate Score Key (kept in a central location).
  • Typically requires ~80% or higher to proceed (exact percentage can vary by school).
  • Supervisor initials the Checkup after verifying that previous work was scored and corrected properly.
  • If the student scores low, they review the section before moving on.

4. Self Test (near the end of the PACE)

  • Comprehensive review quiz covering the entire PACE.
  • Student reviews all three Checkups and key material first.
  • Taken in one sitting without looking back (supervisor often tapes or staples the PACE closed).
  • Serves as a final “quality control” check before the formal test.
  • Student scores it; supervisor reviews.

5. PACE Test (removable center section)

  • The official mastery test.
  • Removed by the supervisor before the student receives the PACE and stored securely.
  • Taken the day after the Self Test (students may not have the PACE in hand).
  • Completed in one supervised sitting with no notes or help.
  • Passing score is typically 80–90% (school-dependent).
  • Successful completion allows the student to advance to the next PACE in that subject. Failure usually requires repeating the PACE or significant review.

Additional Features

  • Goal Cards / Daily Goal Setting: Students write daily page or activity goals and track completion.
  • Scoring Procedure: Students score their own work with a red pen at designated points, correct mistakes, and rescore. This builds honesty and responsibility.
  • Supervisor Initials: Required at Checkups, Self Test, and certain checkpoints.
  • Biblical integration throughout: Scripture, character stories, and Christian worldview examples appear regularly.

This structured, repetitive design (teach → practice → Checkup → review → Self Test → PACE Test) is intentional. It enforces mastery before progression, develops independent work habits, and keeps the supervisor’s role focused on accountability and targeted help rather than traditional lecturing.

Overall Format

  • Thin, stapled or bound booklet (usually 30–50+ pages depending on the level and subject).
  • Color-coded by subject (e.g., yellow for Math, red for English, blue for Science, green for Social Studies, purple for Word Building).
  • Fully self-contained instructional material + practice activities + assessments.
  • Designed so a student can work independently in their “office” (cubicle), with a supervisor providing guidance only when needed.
